*Term Two Overview*

**Welcome to Year Five, Term Two, 2021!**

Term two has kicked off to a flying start!

Below is an outline of Term 2. Under each heading are a number of points that will be covered in each area.

**Reading**

**Class Novel – The Wolf Keepers**

- Classes have been enjoying this Novel and will aim to finish it this Term.

**Summarising and Skimming and Scanning**

- Identify important ideas and information and organise them in summary form in order to remember them
- Construct summaries that are concise and reflect only the important and overarching ideas and information

**Fact and Opinion**

- Identifying the difference between Fact and Opinion

**Text Structures & Features**

- Identify key structure and features of different text types
- Compare and contrast structure and features of different text types

**Reciprocal Reading**

- Students will be introduced to the roles and structure of Reciprocal Reading in preparation to begin this in Term 3.

**Writing**

**Persuasive**

- The opinion of the writer is clearly stated
- The introduction outlines ideas to support the writer’s opinion
- Each reason or argument is expanded into a separate paragraph
- The conclusion restates the writer’s opinion and sums up the reasons.
- Links paragraphs with time connectives e.g. firstly, secondly, thirdly
- Is written in third person passive voice
- Opinions are supported by reasons, facts and statistics
- Uses persuasive devices to convince the reader.

**Reports**

- Structure – introduction, description and conclusion
- Includes facts, heading, subheadings, photos, diagrams, maps
- Each paragraph describes a feature of the subject (e.g. appearance, function, behaviour)

**Language Conventions and Spelling**

**Spelling**

Students will continue to investigate spelling rules and word origins (e.g. prefixes, suffixes, compound words, apostrophes, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs). Students will regularly transfer incorrectly spelt words in their writing, and unknown words in their reading, to their personal dictionaries.

**Numeracy**

**Multiplication**

**Skills**

- Can apply and explain at least two different strategies to solve realistic problems, such as the box method, short and long algorithms, distributive, etc.
- Can use arrays to model multiplication situations and explain strategies used
- Can solve multiplication problems involving one digit numbers by at least two digits using their preferred strategies
- Can solve multiplication problems involving two digit numbers by at least two digits using their preferred strategies
- Understand how to use place value to set out different strategies effectively
- Can estimate the reasonableness of a solution by using known or more easily calculable facts

**Knowledge**

- Know that multiplication and division are inverse operations
- Know, and are fluent with all multiplication number facts to at least 10X10
- Understand how multiplying by factors of 10 involves moving up a place value column.
- Understand and explain that halving and doubling can be used to solve multiplication problems
- Know that distribution law applies to multiplication situations
- Identify factors and multiples of whole numbers.
- Know the difference between factors and multiples and identify them of whole numbers
- Identify the patterns linked to factors and multiples

**Skills**

- Real life, multi-step and worded problems
- Can solve long division problems involving three digit numbers by one digit numbers with remainders using the correct algorithm
- Can solve and explain long division problems involving two digits, by one digit numbers with remainders, using the correct algorithm. (Interpret the remainder of any given problem in real contexts, as a number, a fraction or a decimal)
- Can solve and explain long division problems involving two digits, by one digit numbers, using the correct algorithm
- Can solve and explain short division problems involving two digits, by one digit numbers, using the correct algorithm

**Knowledge**

- Know that multiplication and division are inverse operations
- Know, are fluent with all multiplication and number facts to least 10x10
- Understand and explain that halving and doubling can be used to solve division problems
- Identify and recognise the remainder in division calculations, as either remainder, a fraction or decimal
- Know that distribution law applies to division situations
- Use a range of written and mental calculations strategies to solve division problems

**In Numeracy, we will also be focussing on the following concepts:**

- Time
- Volume and Capacity
- 2D and 3D shape

**Shared Inquiry**

**Geography**

Students investigate the impact of natural disasters on people and places. They further investigate one contemporary bushfire or flood and its impact on individuals and communities. Students examine how people can prevent and minimise the effects of bushfires and floods. Students study either bushfires or floods.

Students investigate how people change the natural environment in Australia and other places around the world. They locate the major countries of North America and Europe and investigate their major characteristics including the influence of people on the environmental characteristics of places.

They examine how people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, have influenced the country’s environmental characteristics.

**Homework**

In line with the school’s Homework Policy, homework is considered compulsory for all Year five students. Your child will receive homework for the term and it will include weekly activities which support the learning that is taking place in the classroom. More details will be sent home/communicated with your child.
